  • FINDING MY POWER THROUGH THE THROTTLE

Motorcycles have always fascinated me. When I was a kid, bikes looked so cool, and I knew that one day, I’d get one. I didn’t really have access to motorsports when I was young, but in 2003, my life changed. My cousin showed up at my house on his brand new bike. I asked him to take me for a ride and away we went! I knew I liked the feeling of riding, but I also knew I didn’t want to be a passenger. I wanted to feel the grips in my hands and control my own destiny. Something about that ride woke up a part of my spirit. I had gotten a bonus from work and wanted to buy something cool. Mentally, I didn’t know if I could handle a bike. So, I was leaning more toward buying a big screen tv than a motorcycle. I told my cousin what I was thinking and he took me to see the movie “Biker Boyz”. I loved it! In hindsight, it was the cheesiest biker movie ever, but my biggest take away was the representation of black women, each riding on their own bikes. On the screen, I saw women that looked like me, riding alongside the men. They weren’t just sexy accessories to the lifestyle, but participants in their own right. I thought, if these women could ride, so could I. So, I headed to craigslist and I bought my 1998 Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R. I jumped into riding with both feet and never looked back! As I started riding, I was having a lot of fun, but the missing part was motorcycle safety. I bought my bike, and my cousin taught me a few things in his neighborhood. Outside of that, I didn’t have any real instruction. I had found my tribe in the motorcycle community, Steel Horses MC. They were known for precision riding and being a great group of motorcyclists who are always willing to help each other. While trying to keep up with the big boys and girls, I had gotten a ticket for riding without an M1, or motorcycle classification. The officer threatened to take my bike for 30 days, but my club brother assured him I would take the class and get my license. This was the fuel I needed to go and take the MSF safety course. I found a two day course near me, and it was a lot of fun! The MSF course taught me about gear, and why it’s important to ride with all the gear, all the time. I learned about “T-CLOCK” and basic motorcycle maintenance. My biggest takeaway was evasive maneuvers and how to react to obstacles or sudden stops. I’ve since been in situations where all of these skills have saved my life. After the class, I went to the DMV and got my license. This is still one of my proudest moments. After the class, I realized I had been extremely lucky and blessed. I tell everyone that asks about learning to ride to take the class first! Learn how to ride the proper way, and don’t inherit the bad habits of your riding buddies. Through Motorcycling, I’ve learned how to conquer my fears, been introduced to a new community of friends and found the freedom to chase my passions. Motorcycling is not only a life skill, it provides wind therapy. After taking care of family, this is the one activity where you’re allowed to put yourself first. It’s the one activity that can be done in a group, but still give you the feeling of communing with yourself. You’ll meet new people that you’ll come to love as family. I’ve discovered my purpose to inspire new riders, and to be of service through education and advice. My passion and purpose for motorcycling fuels Black Girls Ride Magazine. What started on the streets of Los Angeles in 2011, has become and international movement of women riders. We want to continue to encourage women all over the world to challenge themselves, learn to ride and find the joys in motorcycling that we have. All riders are always welcome! That’s my story, now let’s hear yours! We’re partnering with the Motorcycle Safety Foundation to spread the word about our love for motorcycling. Share your story on how motorcycling has affected your life and win $500 in gear! To enter, email: hello@blackgirlsride.com with your story of 500 words, along with a picture of you on your bike. Please include your full name and contact phone number. The contest will run from April 1 – May 1, 2023. The winner will be announced on May 6, 2023. Winner will be notified by email and text message. That’s it! Happy riding!

  • TALLY BIKE FEST RETURNS ON APRIL 14 – 16!

Tallahassee, FL — Tallahassee’s annual motorcycle and music festival, Tallahassee Bike Fest, is gearing up for its another year and has recently begun announcing musicians and events! Set to take place on April 14 through April 16, 2023 at Apalachee Regional Park, the rally will host mapped and guided motorcycle rides, workshops, bike shows, audio competitions, musical performances, biker church, a kid’s corner, and more. Anyone can attend and find an activity to enjoy. VIP passes are also available! Highlighting the capital city’s stunning nature and scenery was a priority for Tallahassee Bike Fest’s CEO and Tallahassee local, Giavona (G) Williams. Riders of all types of bikes are encouraged to join mapped rides on some of Tallahassee’s best roads for riding, featuring rolling hills, canopy roads, and breathtaking views. With nearby beaches less than an hour away, you can truly experience all the best parts of North Florida during your visit! “We don’t care if you ride three-wheels or two wheels, sport, metric, or baggers,” says Tallahassee Bike Fest’s CEO & Founder, Giavona (G) Williams. “We just want every rider and non-rider alike to come and enjoy what our great city has to offer. There is A LOT to explore to keep your schedule full!” Porsche Taylor, Founder of Black Girls Ride will conduct a classroom style rider workshop on Saturday and then lead a ride from Red Hills Powersports, immediately following the workshop. Whether you love rock, country, or blues, Tallahassee Bike Fest has incredible performances scheduled throughout the weekend that everyone will enjoy. Among the musical talent is Jasmine Cain, an award-winning, female rock artist with a powerful voice and compelling song lyrics. Blackbird Anthem, an award-winning, veteran band, will also be returning. Blackbird Anthem creates a sound reminiscent of the age of vinyl where rock, country, and blues merge. The kid’s corner will be back this year for future riders with STACYC’s grass track, face painting, temporary tattoos, and more on Saturday and Sunday only. G has always had a passion for giving back, especially when it comes to helping veterans. As a veteran herself, supporting the veteran community is a cause near and dear to her heart. As a result, G is donating a portion of the rally’s proceeds to Team Guardian, a local veteran nonprofit dedicated to providing dignified transport for fallen veterans and first responders. G is thrilled that the rally has generated a lot of excitement, especially amongst last year’s attendees! She can’t wait to host an even larger turnout and create a fun and memorable experience for her beloved motorcycle community. Did we also mention that it’s free to attend? Plan to stop by anytime between April 14 through April 16. For more information and a more comprehensive schedule of the events happening at Tallahassee Bike Fest 2023, please visit their website: tallybikefest.com.

  • SLINGSHOT’S NEW 2023 LINE UP

Whether you’re a fan or new to the ride, there’s no denying the appeal of the Polaris Slingshot, the three wheel vehicle that has taken over the streets since it’s debut in 2015. Each year, the Slingshot ride has gotten much smoother, with the addition of improved suspension, and a more finished look. In 2020, the introduction of the AutoDrive version allowed automatic drivers to experience the Slingshot thrill. Today, the new 2023 Polaris Slingshot line up features new colors, new accessories, and boasts more factory customization than ever before. “Whether you’re looking to elevate your everyday, escape on an epic adventure, or utilize the three-wheel canvas for self-expression, the 2023 Polaris Slingshot delivers limitless possibilities to design your perfect ride,” said Chris Sergeant, Polaris Slingshot Vice President. “Each year we continue to evolve the lineup by listening to our riders, and this year is another example of thoughtful additions and enhancements that answer the call and serve our passionate owners.” Let’s take a look at the new 2023 line up! Slingshot S with Technology Package 1 Owners looking to take their S model to the next level can opt for Technology Package 1, which includes a 50-watt Rockford Fosgate® audio system with a 2.7-inch display, speaker pods and Rockford Fosgate® tweeters in the dash. Technology Package 1 also upgrades the S models with the vehicle security package and a standard Ripper Series Clear Wind Deflector to improve comfort. S with Technology Package 1 is available in Moonlight White and Jet Black in both a manual (Starting at $24,299 & $24,599 in California) and AutoDrive (Starting at $26,149 & $26,449 in California). Here are a few of my favorite upgrades this year: Vented Sport Hood, Excursion Top, and Slingshade Available in 16 different colors, the Vented Sport Hood improves aerodynamics and cockpit airflow via vented fenders and a hood scoop, while adding aggressive style. The Vented Sport Hood comes stock on the Slingshot R, but is available as an accessory upgrade for all other 2020-2023 models. For additional style and extra shade for sunny days, the Excursion Top and Slingshade are the two available top options on select models. The Excursion Top elevates riding comfort with a canvas top that’s easy to install and remove, ready for install on 2022 and newer vehicles. The Slingshade sets the standard with its vertical opening T-Top panels featuring friction hinge technology and impressive fit and finish. Designed alongside the vehicle, Slingshade flaunts sleek lines and automotive-grade finishes, color-matched to the vehicle. Getting in and out is easy with T-Top panels that feature tinted windows to retain overhead views and provide extra cockpit light. Slingshade is available as an accessory upgrade for all 2020-2023 models. Heated and Cooled Seats The addition of Heated and Cooled seats extends the driving season and enhances the driving experience. With the addition of the premium Brembo® braking system and its multi-piston, painted calipers and lightweight rotors, owners get the ultimate level of performance, aesthetics, and comfort. Audio Standard in all Slingshot models, with the exception of the S, is a state-of-the-art, 100-watt Rockford Fosgate® audio system.
